Patients with cancer prefer personalised clinical information

A randomised trial showed that cancer patients thought a system giving them information based on their medical record was better than one giving only general information (Jones et al, 1241). Patients were more likely to use the personal system again and to show the printouts from that system to their family. There were no major differences in doctors' perceptions of patients, but some evidence that patients randomised to use the general information system were more anxious at three months' follow up. In the long run, with an electronic patient record system available, such a personal information system would cost no more than the general information system to maintain.
