Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors increase risk of upper gastrointestinal bleeding

An increasing number of reports of bleeding disorders associated with antidepressants that selectively block the reuptake of serotonin have been gathered by pharmacovigilance schemes worldwide. On p 1106 de Abajo et al use data from the general practice research database to show an association between selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and upper gastrointestinal bleeding. These drugs may increase the risk of upper gastrointestinal bleeding threefold. The absolute risk is, however, low and similar to that of low dose ibuprofen.
