Two view mammography at subsequent screens is cost effective only with double reading

The NHS breast screening programme is considering whether to introduce two view mammography at subsequent screens in England and Wales. Two views and double reading may independently increase the numbers of cancers detected. On p 1097 Johnston and Brown present the results of a cost effectiveness analysis that compared the costs and numbers of cancers detected from the introduction of two views or changing reading policies to identify efficient options, or both. A policy of two view mammography at incident screens in England and Wales is efficient only if programmes that use single reading moved to double reading. Given the current shortage of radiologists, identification of the policy to be implemented also depends on the availability of staff.
