Obesity among British children is rising

Reilly et al measured the body mass index of a cohort of about 1000 children in the Bristol-Avon area born in 1991-2 to assess the prevalence of obesity at 24, 49, and 61 months (p 1039). They used the 85th and 95th centiles of 1990 reference data to define, respectively, overweight and obesity. There were no differences between boys and girls in the cohort, but the prevalence of obesity significantly exceed expected frequencies at 49 and 61 months.
