Poverty does not predict tuberculosis in Asians in UK

Although a strong association exists between poverty and tuberculosis among white people, no such association exists among Asians. Over half of tuberculosis cases in the United Kingdom occur in ethnic minorities, and the epidemiology of tuberculosis differs fundamentally with ethnicity. Hawker et al (p 1031) studied notifications of tuberculosis in white and Asian residents of Birmingham separately and compared them with measures of social deprivation for the relevant ethnic group. The lack of association with poverty in Asians suggests ethnic differences in the epidemiology of tuberculosis. Different strategies for prevention of tuberculosis are therefore needed for different ethnic groups.
