Senior doctors do not use their GP

Although most consultants and general practitioners are registered with general practitioners, they rarely consult them. Forsythe et al (p 605) surveyed consultants and general practitioners within one health region and found that for most, self prescribing is the norm. In addition, many general practitioners are patients of their partners, and many continue to be responsible for members of their family. Despite these findings, doctors expressed support for BMA guidance on the responsibilities of doctors towards their own health and that of their families. Steps need to be taken to make it easier for doctors to consult their general practitioner or an out of area doctor for sensitive issues such as psychosocial problems and substance misuse.
