Glucocorticoids are effective in treating croup

Glucocorticoids have been used to treat croup for 40 years although their use has been controversial. A meta-analysis by Ausejo et al (p 595) found that the use of glucocorticoids results in significant clinical improvement within 6 hours. This improvement is also shown by the shorter times spent in accident and emergency or in hospital and the less frequent use of additional treatments. Although the quality of studies included in the meta-analysis is good, some concern remains about possible publication bias.
