Leukotriene receptor antagonist reduces need for inhaled corticosteroids

The leukotriene receptor antagonist montelukast allows asthmatic patients to reduce their use of inhaled corticosteroids, a randomised placebo controlled trial has shown (p 87). Lofdahl et al found that patients given 10 mg daily montelukast could cut their use of inhaled corticosteroids by 47% compared with 30% in the placebo group. However, the study did not examine the effect of montelukast beyond 12 weeks and little is known about the long term effects of the drug.
