Antiretroviral therapy does not prevent HIV related non-Hodgkin's lymphoma

Potent antiretroviral combination therapy has not significantly reduced the incidence of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in Swiss AIDS patients. Ledergerber et al (p 23) analysed an ongoing prospective study that includes most patients with HIV in Switzerland and found a reduction of about 80% in the risk of most diseases, including Kaposi's sarcoma. However, the reduction for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma was much smaller and not significant. The authors suggest the factors promoting the development of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma are not related to immune function.
