Day hospitals are no better than other comprehensive elderly care

Community based care is increasingly being emphasised, and it is important to determine the most effective method of delivering treatment. Day hospitals were developed to provide community care for older people, but evidence of their effectiveness is scarce. Forster et al (p 837) describe a systematic review and meta-analysis of 12 randomised trials of day hospital care. They conclude that day hospital care is effective but does not offer significant benefits over other forms of comprehensive care for elderly people.
