Dieting is linked to adolescent eating disorder

Eating disorders in young women are common, and around 3% report symptoms of bulimia nervosa. In a cohort study of 2000 adolescents in Australia, Patton et al (p 765) show that dieting was the clearest predictor of developing an eating disorder and that around two thirds of new cases were in female students dieting at ostensibly moderate levels. Symptoms of depression and anxiety also predisposed to later eating disorder.
