Nicotine nasal spray with patch is effective in stopping smoking

On p 285 Blondal et al evaluate the efficacy of using a nicotine patch for 5 months with a nicotine spray for 1 year in stopping smoking. After 1 year, 27% of participants using the combined treatment were abstinent compared with 11% in the patch only group. Having access to nicotine in the nasal spray probably alleviated smoking urges. Five years after stopping treatment the difference in abstinence rates was double, emphasising the benefits of the combined treatment.
