Nearly a quarter of a million refugees live in Britain, and the numbers
are likely to remain high. All are entitled to NHS treatment and many
have major health needs, but as Jones and Gill describe on p 1444,
there are substantial inequalities in the care they receive. Refugees
often experience difficulties registering with a GP, and language
barriers may worsen the situation when they seek help. They conclude
that increased spending on services for refugees, including
translators, is needed. However, this will require political courage in
a climate where many groups need more resources.
