Women use more oral steroids for asthma than men

Women take both prescription and non-prescription drugs more often than men. This trend is particularly worrying for drugs that are associated with excess morbidity and mortality such as oral steroids for asthma. Sexton et al (p 1434) examined the use of asthma drugs among 237 men and women in East Anglia. They found no difference in the use of beta  agonists and inhaled steroids, but women used significantly more oral steroids than men despite similar symptom scores. The number of visits to the general practitioner for asthma in the past six months showed a dose-response relation with use of oral steroids among women.
