Heavy metals may cause carcinoma of the gall bladder in India

The incidence of carcinoma of the gall bladder is high in eastern Uttar Pradesh and western Bihar, both regions lying downstream of the River Ganges, which is heavily polluted with heavy metals. To investigate whether gall bladder cancer might be associated with exposure to heavy metals Shukla et al measured concentrations of cadmium, chromium, and lead in the gall bladders of 38 patients with gall bladder cancer and 51 with gall stones (p 1288). They found much higher mean concentrations of the metals in the patients with cancer.
