Unemployment independently increases risk of suicide

Suicide is a major reason for premature mortality, especially in young men. On p 1283 Lewis and Sloggett provide some new evidence that supports a causal link between unemployment and suicide. They used the Office of National Statistics longitudinal study, a 1% sample of England and Wales in which census data is linked to mortality. Unemployed people were twice as likely to die from suicide as employed people. Measures of socioeconomic status such as social class and housing tenure seemed less important, particularly once the association between unemployment and suicide had been taken into account.
