Two thousand schizophrenia trials, 1948-97---and still much room for improvement

On p 1181 Thornley and Adams survey controlled trials on the care of patients with schizophrenia from the past 50 years. Generally, trials were small and short, reported poorly, and used outcomes (640 different scales) that were difficult or impossible to apply to everyday practice---and there was little change over time. The authors suggest that there is much scope for well planned, conducted, and reported trials. In addition, drug regulatory authorities should stipulate that the results of both explanatory and pragmatic trials are necessary before a compound is licensed for use in clinical practice.
