Women later diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism take more sick leave

Morbidity before diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism has not been examined in population based studies. On p 848 Lundgren et al report that screening for primary hyperparathyroidism in 5202 postmenopausal women found the disease in 109 (2.1%), 48 of whom were working 5 years before the diagnosis. All women were unaware of the disease and lacked traditional symptoms and complications of the disorder. Case-control analysis of sick leave during the 5 years before the diagnosis showed that women with hyperparathyroidism were 12 times more likely to take sick leave for at least half the investigated period. Doctors' certificates gave cardiovascular disease as the main cause of such sick leave.
