British television medical dramas realistically depict cardiopulmonary resuscitation

The public's knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation is derived from, among other things, television drama. In a survey of 64 episodes of Casualty, Cardiac Arrest, and Medics Gordon et al (p 780) found that it was a common procedure. The cause of the arrest varied: more were a result of trauma, and occurred in young patients, than in real life, but the overall success rate was similar to survival rates in real life.
