Extremely long working hours are suspected of increasing the risk of
sudden death from too much occupational stress. Few studies, however,
have examined whether long working hours and a change in working hours
influence the risk of acute myocardial infarction. In their
case-control study Sokejima and Kagamimori (p 775) found a U shaped
association between mean monthly working hours and the risk of acute
myocardial infarction. In addition, there seemed to be a trend for the
risk to increase with greater increases in working hours. Further study
is necessary to clarify the mechanism for the U shaped association and
its influence on the low morbidity and mortality from acute myocardial
infarction in Japan.
