Quarter of the enterococci responsible for endocarditis are resistant

Enterococci cause 5-15% of cases of bacterial endocarditis. Johnson et al found resistance to both streptomycin and gentamicin, drugs recommended for treatment, in 26% of 120 cases sent for testing at a public health laboratory (p 629). They suggest that early evaluation of novel narrow spectrum anti-Gram positive agents would be beneficial.
