Preventive treatment for tuberculosis in adults infected with HIV does confer benefits

Preventive treatment for tuberculosis has long been known to reduce the risk of active disease in those with latent tuberculosis infection or recent close contact with an active case. What is the benefit of preventive treatment to adults infected with HIV? On p 625 Wilkinson et al report the results of a systematic review of randomised placebo controlled trials from Uganda, Haiti, Kenya, and the United States. Preventive treatment is of benefit to adults infected with HIV who have latent tuberculosis (shown by a positive tuberculin skin test) by reducing the number of cases of active disease and the number of deaths.
