The British breast screening programme has not invited women over 64 because older women are not thought likely to take up such screening.
On p 388 Rubin et al report the first of three pilot sudies to assess
uptake and detection rates among women aged 65-69. Uptake was 76%
among women aged 65-67 and 73% for those aged 68 or 69, compared with
80% for those under 65; detection rates were 8/1000, 17.4/1000, and
7.1/1000 respectively. The authors conclude that women invited for
screening at younger ages will continue to come after 65.
