Cognitive behaviour therapy reduces psychotic symptoms

Despite advances in drug treatment, persistent symptoms are common in patients with chronic schizophrenia. On p 303 Tarrier et al report on a randomised controlled trial of cognitive behaviour therapy, supportive counselling, and routine care for psychotic symptoms in patients with chronic schizophrenia. All patients received stable neuroleptic medication. Reduction in psychotic symptoms was greatest in patients receiving cognitive behaviour therapy, with those receiving supportive counselling occupying an intermediary position. Whether benefits can be maintained and psychological treatments can be used to treat acutely ill patients need to be ascertained.
