Excess risk of death with selegiline is small

Concern has been raised about the possibility that use of selegiline in combination with levodopa to treat patients with Parkinson's disease is associated with an increased risk of death. Thorogood et al examined data on patients taking drugs for Parkinson's disease who are included in the General Practice Research Database (p 252). They found a small, non-significant increase in risk of death in patients taking selegiline in combination with levodopa and a slightly greater, but still non-significant, increase in risk of death in patients taking selegiline alone. They conclude that excess risk associated with use of selegiline would be small.
