Giving albumin increases mortality in critically ill patients

The licensed indications for use of human albumin are the emergency treatment of shock, acute management of burns, and clinical situations associated with hypoproteinaemia. However, a systematic review of randomised controlled trials by the Cochrane Injuries Group Albumin Reviewers (p 235) showed that albumin administration results in six extra deaths for every 100 patients treated. The authors call for an urgent review of the use of human albumin solution in critically ill patients.
