Mortality is high in treated hypertension

Although treatment of hypertension reduces cardiovascular complications, the long term prognosis of treated hypertension is virtually unknown. For over 20 years Andersson et al (p 167) studied 686 men treated for hypertension. Compared with controls they showed a significantly increased mortality especially from myocardial infarction. The prognosis was apparent only after 10-12 years. Serum cholesterol concentration was one of the most important risk factors for dying from myocardial infarction.
