High blood pressure associated with longer life among elderly people

Blood pressure is an important risk factor for mortality. Some studies, however, have found that in people aged over 80 those with higher blood pressure live longer. In a study on p 1780 Boshuizen et al followed all 85 year olds in Leiden, the Netherlands, for at least 5 years. Their results confirm this inverse relation. Further analysis, however, showed that the relation was related to poorer health in participants with low blood pressure. After adjusting for health status, the relation between blood pressure and all cause mortality was no longer significant. However, there did seem to be a positive relation between diastolic blood pressure and mortality from cardiovascular causes and stroke. Treating hypertension should not shorten life expectancy and may thus reduce disability or death from stroke.
