Genital chlamydial infections cause pelvic inflammatory disease and may
lead to ectopic pregnancy and infertility. In Sweden screening for
chlamydial infections, contact tracing, and free treatment were
introduced in the 1980s. On p 1776 Egger et al examine the impact of
these measures on the risk of ectopic pregnancy in Uppsala. Between
1985 and 1995 the rates of chlamydial infections and of ectopic
pregnancy declined. There was a strong correlation between the rate of
ectopic pregnancy and the rate of chlamydial infection in the same year
for women aged 20-24 years. Regression analyses suggest that among
young women chlamydial infections are the main cause of ectopic
pregnancy.
