Centre care of cystic fibrosis improves clinical outcome

Although it is recommended that patients with cystic fibrosis are cared for by specialist centres there is no direct evidence to support the provision of these services. On p 1771 Mahadeva et al compare patients with cystic fibrosis who never had specialist care with those attending the adult cystic fibrosis centre in Manchester. The results show that specialist management in a paediatric and adult cystic fibrosis centre results in a greatly improved body mass index and lung function despite earlier colonisation with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These data support the development of cystic fibrosis centres and suggest that patients with cystic fibrosis should receive centre care at the earliest possible age if they are to gain the impetus for prolonged survival in adulthood.
