System for identifying and managing underperforming doctors is inadequate

Taylor (p 1705) reports the results of a survey of professionals and patients relating to the GMC's new performance procedures.While this survey identifies a small population of doctors whoare adjudged to be underperforming, either by their peers or bypatients' representatives, it also confirms the lack of any clearmechanisms by which doctors can confirm for themselves, theircommissioners, and the public that they are providing an acceptablelevel of care.
