System for identifying and managing underperforming doctors is inadequate

Taylor (p 1705) reports the results of a survey of professionals and patients relating to the GMC's new performance procedures. While this survey identifies a small population of doctors who are adjudged to be underperforming, either by their peers or by patients' representatives, it also confirms the lack of any clear mechanisms by which doctors can confirm for themselves, their commissioners, and the public that they are providing an acceptable level of care.
