The cause of infantile colic is far from clear, but several biological
and social factors have been proposed
for example, allergy to cows'
milk. Uncertainty about the cause has lead to many different
treatments. On p 1563 Lucassen et al report the results of a
systematic review of controlled trials on the effectiveness of
treatments. Many studies were not supported by clear evidence of
effectiveness, but substitution of cows' milk by hypoallergenic formula milks and so called sensitive differential responding by carers
were effective.
