Cognitive behaviour therapy is promising in childhood depressive disorder

Over the past 15 years there has been increasing recognition that children suffer depressive conditions. A systematic review concluded that tricyclics were of unproved benefit. On p 1559 Harrington et al present a systematic review of six trials of a common psychological treatment---cognitive behaviour therapy. The results suggest that it may be useful in mild or moderately severe cases of juvenile depression. Studies that compare cognitive behaviour therapy with antidepressant medication are now required.
