Integrated case management reduces functional decline and costs in older patients

Since the introduction of case management several years ago many have questioned whether it really provides better and more cost effective care for older people. On p 1348 Bernabei et al report results from a randomised study of case management and integrated care and usual community care in 200 patients living in a well developed area of northern Italy. After 1 year's follow up the intervention group showed significant reductions in functional decline, rate of admission to hospital or nursing home, and visits from general practitioners, with an overall annual saving of £1125 per person.
