Despite the prevalence and seriousness of pre-eclampsia, its causes
remain obscure. On p 1343 a population based study from Norway shows
that the fetus may contribute substantially to the mother's risk of
pre-eclampsia through paternal genetic influence. The study linked
information on different mothers' pregnancies with the same father.
The study also compared pregnancies in half sisters who had the same
mother and different fathers or the same father and different mothers.
The authors suggest that purely maternal inheritance (by mitochondrial
DNA) does not have a role in pre-eclampsia.
