Individual dietary advice has modest effects on cholesterol

Although individual dietary counselling is often recommended, its efficacy in reducing blood cholesterol concentration is uncertain. On p 1213 Tang et al review 19 randomised trials of interventions to lower blood cholesterol concentration in free-living subjects. They found that dietary advice to modify fat intake achieved a reduction in blood total cholesterol of 3-6% after about 12 months' intervention---much less than reductions predicted by studies in controlled settings. They suggest that this failure is a result of poor compliance.
