Postal risk appraisal questionnaire slightly increases cholesterol testing in high risk patients

Opportunistic approaches to screening are widely advocated but often fail to reach eligible patients. On p 1208 Hutchison et al report the effect on cholesterol testing of a self administered questionnaire appraising risk of coronary heart disease. In all, 3152 adults with no history of coronary heart disease and no cholesterol test during the previous five years were randomly assigned to receive either the risk appraisal questionnaire or a general health questionnaire and were followed up for three months. Of those who met predefined risk based screening criteria, 10.7% who received the risk appraisal questionnaire and 1.8% who received the general questionnaire had a cholesterol test.
