Fall in coronary deaths in Poland may be linked to lower meat and butter intake

Social and economic transformation in Poland has been unusually rapid. On p 1047 Zatonski et al show that mortality from ischaemic heart disease and atherosclerosis at ages 45-64 declined abruptly between 1991 and 1994---by over 20%---while mortality from stroke declined by less than 10%. The abolition of food subsidies in 1989 and the fall in real disposable income produced sharp swings from animal to vegetable fats. The abolition of import controls also improved the supply of fresh fruits, especially in winter and spring. These changes may be linked with the downturn, especially as other factors, including stress, smoking, and alcohol consumption, seemed to have played little part.
