The relation between low birth weight and high blood pressure in adult
life may be a consequence of fetal adaptation to undernutrition in
utero. Both blood pressure and birth weight are, however, influenced by
hereditary factors, and little information is available about the
parents of the subjects in whom the relation has been observed. On
p 834 Walker et al measured blood pressure in and obtained the birth
weight of 452 young adults aged 16-26 years, having also obtained both
of their parents' blood pressures. Mothers with higher blood pressure
had offspring with both higher blood pressure and lower birth weight.
Hereditary factors need to be considered with the programming effects
of altered nutrition to understand the fetal origins of cardiovascular
disease.
