Five modifiable risk factors for coronary artery disease exist in type 2 diabetes

Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus have an increased incidence of disease related to atheroma and decreased life expectancy. On p 823 the UK Prospective Diabetes Study Group reports on mortality and coronary artery disease in over 3000 patients with recently diagnosed type 2 diabetes and no evidence of disease related to atheroma at diagnosis. The study showed an increased standardised mortality ratio after 5 years from diagnosis. Over a median of 8 years, 11% of patients had a myocardial infarction or developed angina. The risk factors for coronary artery disease were raised values of low density lipoprotein cholesterol and decreased values of high density lipoprotein cholesterol, hyperglycaemia, hypertension, and smoking.
