Women who know they have HIV act to reduce transmission to their babies

Reviewing all mother-infant pairs who presented to a London hospital for diagnosis of HIV infection in 1994-7, Lyall et al (p 268) found that women who had been diagnosed as HIV infected all acted to reduce the risk of transmission to their infants. About half chose to have a caesarean section and none breast fed. The vertical transmission rate was 12% overall but was halved in those who used antiretroviral therapy or had a caesarean section. Uptake of antiretroviral therapy increased significantly over time.
