Emergency admissions to paediatric ITUs are blocked by children on ventilators

Clinicians think that paediatric intensive care units might accommodate more admissions if the units had fewer children chronically dependent on ventilators. To test this Fraser et al asked all 24 paediatric intensive care units in England and Scotland about numbers of admissions, refusals, and children on ventilators, and average length of stay in January to March 1996. The 24 units provided 152 staffed beds: 18 children were dependent on ventilators in eight units; 267 children were refused admission. They calculated that an extra 120 children could have been admitted had the beds occupied by children on ventilators been available.
