The number of general practitioners in England and Wales continues to rise. Data gathered by the Department of Health from all 98 family health services authorities in England and Wales show that between April 1995 and March 1996 the total number of doctors working as general practitioners rose by 0.7% to 30 839. This figure includes assistants and registrars, but not locums.
