Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and bovine spongiform encephalopathy: any connection?
Two cases of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease have recentlybeen reported in teenagers in Britain,12 adding to only fourcases previously reported in this age group. Four British dairyfarmers have died from Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in the pastthree years345--an occupational association that is unlikelyto have arisen by chance. In the light of these findings, weasked a range of professionals how likely they thought it wasthat the agent responsible for Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease couldbe transmitted to humans from cattle affected with bovine spongiformencephalopathy.
