GPs will be asked to spearhead mental health care in the next decade

General practitioners in England will be encouraged to sign up to better training in mental health care, as part of the government’s latest mental health policy, said the national director for mental health, Louis Appleby.

Speaking at a conference of the Westminster Health Forum in London on 17 September, Professor Appleby said he intended to work with the Royal College of General Practitioners to get support for the new policy, called New Horizons, by December. This will mark the end of the consultation period on the proposed changes and the replacement of the national service framework for mental health, which has been in place for the last 10 years.

He described the initiative as "a really key moment" to shape mental health care for the next decade. "It’s one [opportunity] that won’t come around again in the lifetime of many people in this room," he said. The government could offer . . . [Full text of this article]
