US government increases funds to local health centres: The US Department of Health and Human Services has announced nearly $26m (£16m; {euro}18m) in grants to boost services at 180 health centres that served more than 17 million "medically underserved" people in 2008. The health and human services secretary, Kathleen Sebelius, said that the grants were especially important at a time when 14.5 million people are unemployed and 47 million do not have health insurance.

FDA reviews safety of orlistat: The US Food and Drug Administration is reviewing the safety of the weight loss drug orlistat (marketed as Xenical on prescription and Alli over the counter). It has received 32 reports of serious liver injury, including six cases of liver failure, in people taking the drug. While analysis of the side effects data is ongoing, the FDA is advising that people already taking orlistat should continue (see www.fda.gov).
