HIV mortality in industrialised countries compares with other chronic diseases: A study based on 29 935 patients in nine industrialised countries shows that the mortality of HIV patients who start antiretroviral treatment and survive the first six months continues to be higher than in the general population, but for many patients excess mortality is moderate and comparable with patients with other chronic conditions (International Journal of Epidemiology 2009 Oct 9, doi:10.1093/ije/dyp306). Earlier diagnosis might prevent much of the excess mortality, say the researchers.

Campaigners call for clarity on abortion rights in Peru: The human rights groups Demus of Peru and the US based Center for Reproductive Rights have said that Peru should urgently review its restrictive interpretation of therapeutic abortion, which is legal, and put greater emphasis on pregnancy among teenagers and on the law for unwanted pregnancies.
