Patients and doctors are asked to report antivirals’ side effects as swine flu spreads

The number of people in the United Kingdom confirmed as having died after contracting the A/H1N1 virus rose to seven this week after the deaths of three more people, including two children, were announced. All were said to have had serious underlying health problems.

A nine year old girl from south London died at the weekend. The girl is the second person in the capital to die after contracting the virus. NHS London said that no further details of the case would be released.

The two others came from Dewsbury in West Yorkshire. One, a 9 year old girl, died on 2 July. She had epilepsy and attended a special school. The other was a teacher in his 40s who died on 5 July.

Of the seven people who have so far died from A/H1N1 three have been children. Only one person has been elderly.
