London hospital breached hygiene code: Homerton Hospital in east London has been issued with an improvement notice by the Healthcare Commission because of breaches of the government’s hygiene code. In an unannounced inspection the commission found that the hospital had inadequate arrangements for decontaminating equipment, had poor attendance at mandatory staff training, and had completed just three out of nine scheduled internal audits. The trust has until 21 January to resolve problems related to decontamination and 30 January for all other matters.

Germany bans herbal drug mixture: Sales of the herbal drug mixture "spice" will be illegal in Germany after January because of modifications to the Controlled Substances Act. Recent studies have found that the mixture, marketed around the world under such names as Spice Gold and Spice Silver, contains JWH-018, a synthetic substance with cannabis-like effects.
