Chaplaincy services cost NHS £40m: Research by the National Secular Society has found that chaplaincy services cost the NHS more than £40m ({euro}44m; $59m) a year. The money could pay for about another 1300 nurses or 2500 cleaning staff, it says. The society has called on the health minister, Alan Johnson, to consider ending the funding.

Caesarean section rate in Germany rose by 50% in 10 years: Nearly a third (195 000 or 29.3%) of the approximately 664 000 women who gave birth in German hospitals in 2007 had a caesarean section, up from 18.5% in 1997, according to the German Statistical Office (Destatis). Rates of births achieved with vacuum extraction (4.6%) and forceps (0.7%) were both less than 10 years ago.
